Happy 60th birthday Dave Thomas

There are very few people in this world who could have an entire book written about how people admire them (and fewer still who would have such a book written by their employees). But that’s what we did for Dave’s 60th birthday and we meant every word.

Thanks for being a great boss, leader and friend.

Happy birthday, Dave.

Introducing our new, less pornographic logo

We have a pornographic logo.

Take a nice, long look at it. Do you see it?

Look again.

See it now?

You do? Pervert. There’s nothing pornographic about our logo. Get your mind out of the gutter.

Our network, however, seems to think otherwise:

I’ve considered what may have caused this and narrowed it down to:

  1. Our network filters are massively jacked up
  2. The Thomases created a pornographic logo

I’m leaning toward the former.

While there isn’t anything dirty about our logo, we still live in a politically correct, hyper-sensitive world where we don’t want to offend anyone – including our servers. That being said, I’d like to announce the new, porn-free ThomasArts logo:

I made this beaut’ in about 14 seconds over at MakeYourOwnGapLogo.com where you can…wait for it… make your own logo look like the new Gap logo which has caused quite a stir in the Twittosphere.

What do you think of the new direction? Leave word in the comments.

World record set for most blog posts written

Our sincere congratulations to Darren Murph over at Engadget for setting a world record for most blog posts ever written – 17,212 and counting.

Anyone who would like to try and break that record should come see the social media team located next to Strategy Bay.

Yeah, we can do that

My, my, my aren’t we a capable bunch? AdNews published a very pretty chart of the offerings and capabilities of Utah ad agencies. Look at that! Farmington is still considered part of Utah! And ThomasArts literally offers services across the board.

You can download a PDF here if you want to confirm for yourself that we indeed do everything from online lead generation to focus groups to variable data printing to high-kick contests.

In closing, I feel the need to quote my rad brother from the 90s, Mr. Vanilla (or, Mr. Ice – I’ve heard it both ways): if you got a problem, yo we’ll solve it. Something, something, DJ revolves it.

Pepsi vs. The President…Pepsi wins

Image created by Lawrence Yang

How many people voted in Pepsi’s Refresh Project (a crowdsourced social media effort to distribute funds to worthy causes)? More votes than were cast in the 2008 presidential election, according to Mashable.

And if I recall correctly, there was a pretty good turn-out for that particular election.

What does this mean? Well, on one hand it means that a company that sells sugar water does a better job of getting people to act than potential leaders of the free world. Of course, the numbers could be quite skewed because people can vote 10 times each day for their favorite Pepsi projects. Still, it’s interesting to look at what motivates people.

What can be learned from this? Leave your insights in the comments.

Let’s hula. . . hoop?

I already feel like this blog should be filled with references to elementary school necessities like my first pencil box, the big toy, skipping monkey bars and tetherball.

A couple of days ago, I made my way into the workout room to get some water and saw a new piece of “exercise” equipment hanging on the door.  I use the term “exercise” loosely because technically, typing this blog could be considered exercise for my gorilla-like hands but. . . I digress.

A new way to work it.

Have what it takes?

Anyhow, there were two brightly colored hula hoops hanging on the back of the door, beckoning any unsuspecting workout enthusiast to give them a good ol’ college try (or elementary school, as the case may be).  Normally I’m not tempted by anything BUT the water in that workout room. . . and maybe occasionally the floor mat now that I’ve seen how good they can be for R and R.  But I will admit that I took a good, long, hard look at those hoops wondering if I still had what it takes.  After all, if someone waved a Trapper Keeper in your face would you not stop for a minute to reminisce and pay your respects?  I think not.

Although I can say that I could out hula the majority of the girls on the black top when I was young, I now fear the hoop for reasons that I think we can all relate to.  I will not go into detail but all I will say is that jumping out of a swing is NOT what it used to be.

Now comes the dare.  The first five people that bring one of these hoops into Carlee and David’s office and show us how it’s done will be rewarded.

Google Instant Search + Billy Joel

Google has launched Instant Search a few days ago (it should be active on your account by now). As if it was overly time-consuming (0.23 seconds) to search for “ThomasArts” before, Google now gives you results as you type.

Now some enterprising fellow has set this new feature to music to demonstrate the speed at which you can now search. Gotta say it’s pretty impressive.

When I’d first heard about this I wondered how they were going to handle advertising with this since the search results would change as the user types. Those crafty engineers at Google figured out how to deliver ads as fast as they do search results. Watch ads on the right as the search query changes (go full-screen):

Google says the faster results will save the world 972,222 HOURS per DAY. The Federal Minimum Wage is $7.25 so if you do the math that’s $7,048,609.50 per day Google is giving back to the world.

Thanks Google!

Of course, that’s assuming we use that time to work instead of using it to watch more YouTube.

What do you think of the new feature? Useful or just eye candy? Let us know in the comments.

The New Twitter launches

Twitter is launching a revamp of its site with two big changes. First, a two-column layout (the left column is your stream and the right is additional detail about the selected tweet). The second is in-line media meaning if someone shares a link to a picture or YouTube video, you won’t have to leave Twitter to view it. Instead, it will be displayed in the right column. Like so:

There are other details emerging. But for now check out the artsy video below.

That all seems well and good, but forgive me if  I have my doubts as to whether or not they can pull it off considering their infrastructure woes which are still very evident.

The change will be rolling out gradually to users over the next little while. What are your thoughts on the new features? Is it enough to get you to give up your TweetDecks and HootSuites? Let us know in the comments – especially if you get this activated on your account.

P.S. Engadget has a photo gallery of the new layout.
